Q.

Why is my weight loss up and down?

I lost four and half pounds the first week, seven pounds the second week, then I put four and half pounds back on the third week, lost two more pounds and have now stopped altogether.

Is this a bit strange? I am definitely keeping within my calories, only going over on Saturday when I am running 10 miles. I need the extra calories then as I have been training for a half marathon for the last six months.

However, even with this I am still coming under over the week by an average of 3,000 calories. I run another 8 miles a week on top of the 10 and cycle 6 miles a week also. What would your advice be? [:?]

Our expert says...

Hello,

Well it does sound like you have been on a bit of a roller coaster with your weight loss, but the most important bit of information that you have given me is that the overall trend is down!

When it comes to losing weight, everyone?s body reacts differently. With some people there is a smooth, steady weight loss and for others it varies every week, even when the calories are more or less the same. It is quite common to lose more weight during the first few weeks, but it is unlikely that you gained weight through putting on fat if you stayed within your calorie and fat targets. This is much more likely to be due to water retention or hormonal factors.

However, it does sound like you have hit the all too common ?dieter?s plateau?, when weight loss seems to stop for no reason. I wonder if you are eating enough, particularly with all the exercise you are doing? If your calorie intake is averaging out at under 3,000 calories each week, I would suggest that you try to eat a little more so that you are nearer your target each day. This may sound like strange advice when you are trying to lose weight, but it may be that your body is ?hanging on? to the calories you are eating as they are not enough. I think if you look in the forums, this has worked for other people and is certainly worth a try. Just make sure your additional food is healthy e.g. complex carbs or lean protein. Good luck!
