Why is my weight loss so slow?

Most days I am below 1000 cals yet my weight loss is very slow. Why do you think this is happening?

Hello,

Thank you for your question.  I can understand your frustration at eating so little and yet losing weight so slowly, but unfortunately sometimes this is the case with some people and is just the way their metabolism reacts.

I am a little concerned if you are consistently eating less than 1000 calories a day, as you may not be getting all the nutrients your body needs to function efficiently.  And this can include burning off fat!  Reducing your calories too low can sometimes be a false economy, as your body can react by ‘hanging on’ to calories, as it is not sure when it will get some more.  You may want to try increasing your calorific intake slightly (say by 100-200 calories a day) to see if this has a positive effect on your weight loss?

I would encourage you to eat 3 regular meals a day, as this keeps your metabolism fired up throughout the day.  Also, make sure that you have lots of variety in your diet.  A mistake a lot of dieters make is to stick to a small selection of the same foods, which your body becomes used to.  Keep what you eat varied and you will get a broader selection of vitamins and minerals, not to mention more interesting meals!

Apart from this, ensure you eat your 5-a-day fruit and veg, drink plenty of water throughout the day and make sure each meal has some lean protein and complex carbohydrates (e.g. wholemeal bread or brown rice) rather than refined carbohydrates.  Don’t become disheartened even if your weight loss is slow.  Keep at it and you should get to your target in the end!
