What can I do to lose the weight gained after Hysterectomy?

Hi, I joined nutracheck 3 weeks ago, I was feeling so down about my weight, I have never had a problem losing excess weight before. I had a hysterectomy 16 mths ago & was put on HRT immediately, since then I have put on almost 3 stone, I am also having to take anti depressants because after the op I was very tearful etc. & to top all that off, I have familial hypercholesterolaemia which I have to take a statin........all this medication has led to a huge increase in my weight. I don't go anywhere without my pedometer now & try to get at least 10000 steps in everyday. I weigh all my food & input everything into my diary. I am always under my cals, fat etc, but I am beginning to feel that the 'fat person' I detest so much is winning yet again. I have only lost 1lb, which is really disheartening, I have lost a few inches here & there........is this normal & when ,if ever, will I begin to see even a little difference?

Our expert says...

 Hi

It’s extra tough when you’ve always been able to keep the weight off but are now having so much difficulty. But much of your problem is to do with factors beyond your control – the HRT, the anti-depressants and so on. You say you have lost a pound in three weeks, which is obviously nowhere near what you would hope for, but continued at this rate it is over a stone in a year.  I think your main focus for now must be stabilising your weight and ensuring it does not rise. And then to keep in touch with your doctor and see what can be done in terms of your medication to ensure that losing weight becomes a little easier for you. On a positive note, it’s absolutely great that you are getting 10,000 steps a day. But also try to incorporate some resistance exercise – which could be lunges, sit-ups, squats etc, or light weights. These will help to increase your muscle mass, and muscle is a more metabolically active tissue than fat and so uses up more calories.

As this is probably going to require patience, do try to find yourself a set of meals, snacks and treats that you can really enjoy within your calorie allowance. I hope this helps, and good luck!
