Q.

Water makes me gag, any suggestions?

Subject: Water Hi, I find it very difficult to drink any water, I know it sounds stupid but it makes me gag. Any suggestions and does it do me any harm?

Our expert says...

Hello, thanks for your query.

Not everyone likes water, and the good news is that water isn’t the only fluid of merit when it comes to keeping our bodies well hydrated, so if you prefer a cup of tea, squash or fruit juice that’s fine!

The only drinks that don't  count towards your fluid intake are those  of high alcoholic strength such as wine or spirits.

The European Food safety Authority recently suggested that an adequate water intake for males is 2.5 litres a day and for women 2 litres a day, but their recommendation includes water supplied by foods like fruit, vegetables, soups and casseroles too, which in the average diet is 20 per cent (400-500ml) of the total fluid we take in.

Water is obviously a really good choice to drink as it is calorie and acid free and does not harm your teeth. But if you don't like it you are fine to have  whatever low calorie options you prefer as an alternative.

The much-feted 6-8 cups or glasses a day is only a rough guide and it’s a myth that you must drink around the clock when you have no desire to do so. If you’re unsure whether you are optimally hydrated, take a look at the colour of your urine - it should be a pale straw colour.

I do hope this helps!
