Q.

Is the high fat content in salmon bad for me?

I have started to eat a lot of salmon , thinking it was good for my diet, but it seems to have a lot of fat content, is this bad for me?

A.

Our expert says...

You’re absolutely right that salmon does have quite a high fat content. However the fats in oily fish such as salmon are what we term ‘good fats’. Good fats are ‘unsaturated’ fats, and are classified as ‘good’ because of the effect they can have on our blood cholesterol. Good fats don’t raise our blood cholesterol levels so they can be helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease.

In contrast, bad fats (e.g. meat fat, dairy, cheese, pastry, cakes etc) are ‘saturated’ fats. These have been found to raise blood cholesterol levels and increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Now although good fats and bad fats can have very different effects on our blood cholesterol levels, fat is still fat in terms of calories. To explain, fat is the most concentrated source of energy in our diet with 9 kcals per grams. Therefore it’s recommended to reduce your total fat intake as a means to staying on track with your calorie allowance.

The total amount of fat in your diet should remain below 33% of your total calorie intake. So based on a 1400 calorie diet this equates to approximately 52g fat per day. Providing you keep an eye on your fat intake elsewhere in your diet and ensure you stay within your calorie allowance, eating salmon regularly should not have any negative effects on your diet or health. A good rule of thumb is to replace the saturated fats with unsaturated fats, rather than increasing your total fat intake.

I hope this helps, and please get in touch if you need anything further.

Kind regards
