Q.

Is my diet giving me spots?

Since starting on this plan I've noticed that my skin has got quite bad. Several large spots have appeared on my face and they are taking a long time to go. I thought that I might be run down but I've noticed that others on the forum are mentioning the same problem.
Is there anything that might be lacking in my diet, that maybe causing this? I'm drinking about 5 glasses of water a day plus coffee and diet drinks. I also eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
This is really making me feel run down and fed up.

Our expert says...

There?s no evidence that dieting cause spots, and in fact very little evidence that diet has anything to do with spots at all. However... (isn't there always a however?!) it makes sense that what you eat can have an impact on your health and well being generally and that includes the skin too. So I'm not going to argue that there isn't a connection at all.

If this is more than just a coincidence then I think the link is more likely to be hormonal - as women lose weight, their level of circulating oestrogen tends to fall and a hormonal "blip" like this may increase your risk of spots. The good news is that everything should settle down in the end and you?ll be healthier in the long run. In the interim keep on eating plenty of fruits and veg and try to include lots of zinc rich foods which will help with skin healing. These include lean red meat, sardines and crab, nuts and seeds and whole grain cereals. You could also take a multivitamin to make sure you aren't missing any trace nutrients.

According to a recent research study, avoiding high glycaemic load foods (sugary foods and foods made with white flour) could also help acne sufferers to clear up their skin. Aim for high-fibre, slower releasing carbs instead (like pasta, brown basmati rice, All bran and pulses) instead.
