Q.

Is it possible to drink too much water?

I was just wondering could we drink too much water? I've been drinking over 2 litres a day - is that okay? Kay x x x

Our expert says...

Hi Kay,

It is, I'm afraid, possible to have too much of something that can be good for you and this includes water. However, this normally applies in quite extreme circumstances.

Too much water is a topical issue at the moment, as you may have seen the recent press coverage about a lady who embarked on a ?hydration diet?, which involved drinking 6 pints of water a day. It appears that the medical problems this lady encountered may have been made worse by being on a low-salt diet at the same time. Too much water can dilute vital salt levels in the blood, a medical condition called hyponatraemia, and, as a result of this, the body?s cells can swell and, when that happens, the brain can be affected.

Having said this, 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day is generally considered a healthy level and more may be needed if the weather is extremely hot or you are exercising regularly. It is best to drink your water over the course of the day (not all in one go!) and this can improve things like your skin and digestion. It can also suppress the feelings of hunger, which are sometimes caused by the body needing fluids, so can be very useful when on a weight loss regime. So, my advice is to keep yourself hydrated at a healthy level, taking into account how much exercise you are doing.
