Q.

Is a high protein, low carb diet healthy for you?

Hi - my friend has lost a lot of weight on the low carb, high protein diet. Where she is not allowed to eat more than 40 grms of carbs a day. I understand the science behind it but I am not sure that it is very good for you. What are your thoughts on this type of diet? Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

40g grams of carbohydrate per day is a very low amount and not consistent with the consensus of nutritional opinion which is that we should base our diets around starchy carbohydrates, along with equally big volumes of fruits and vegetable and smaller amounts of protein and dairy foods.

The problem with cutting you carbohydrates as low ias this is that you can experience low energy, and don’t get enough healthy whole grains and fibre which are linked with lower rates of heart disease and better digestive health. And if you are trying to maintain a reasonable exercise programme it also pays to get plenty of carbohydates as these are your body’s primarily energy source.

Sometimes, particularly when you are  stuck in a plateau phase, eating a bit more protein can be beneficial as it helps curb appetite and can be effective in helping to smooth out ups and dow in your blood sugar that can lead to cravings. But you should still eat moderate quantities of carbs at every meal - opt for the slow releasing type such as pulses, whole grain bread or pasta, brown rice or potatoes in  their skins.
