I have painful knees - any advice for strengthening muscles?

I just went to hospital yesterday to find out why my knees are so painful and stiff. I am 44, currently weigh 71kg, have a sedentary job and a houseful of children. It turns out I have a little bit of early onset arthritis and also a gait problem in that my left knee turns in when I walk. It isn't clear whether this is or is not a cause of the pain and stiffness. X-rays showed I have some bone growth and one cartiledge is a bit worn.

Anyway, the upshot is that I need to strengthen up the muscles that support the knees. I wonder if you have any advice. I was advised to carry on swimming and cycling, and possibly use a trampoline. Any other thoughts?

I need short sessions that I can do at home around family duties. I would be very grateful for your advice.
