Q.

How can I stop binging on my days off?

If I'm at home all day on my days off I normally end up binging on chocolate and crisps even if I have had a healthy breakfast and lunch. How can I stop this? The thought keeps popping into my mind until I do it.

Hi.

I think you need to try and break this cycle you seem to have got into and develop some new habits that are going to support your weight loss goals. Maybe start by planning your days off, so that you are kept busy and your mind is occupied, and plan your day so that you don?t stay in the house all day by yourself. Going for a walk is a great way to break the day up and is good, calorie burning exercise too!

I?d also suggest swapping the chocolate and crisps that are tempting you for healthier alternatives. For example, there are many low-fat and sugar-free snack bars in the supermarkets nowadays and an even wider selection of healthy biscuits, cakes and snacks in the health food shops. Fill your fruit bowl with colourful fruits, which will satisfy your sweet tooth, and swap your packets of crisps for a small handful of mixed seeds and nuts. These are much more nutritious and satisfying.

I know it's not easy to break old habits, so don't be too hard on yourself if it takes a little time to introduce some new routines. Rather than tell yourself that you are not allowed to eat these foods (which immediately makes you want them!), perhaps allow yourself a 'treat' time when you can eat what you want. That way you won't feel like you are depriving yourself and, as your taste buds change over time, you may find you don't crave these types of food any more. Good luck!
