Q.

How can I eat to get better from an infection?

Since having my tooth extracted, I felt so unwell and finally after 5 days of trying to get someone to listen, my doctor finally told me I've got a blood infection! Great! Anyway, since receiving my extra strength antibiotics days ago, I haven't been eating much at all. In fact I haven't been on here since because all I've managed to get down me is rice pudding pots, creme caramel and soup. All this in tiny measures. Could you please advise on what I can eat to sustain me and get me on the road to recovery.

The other thing I forgot to mention was that the food I've been eating during this time, actually makes my stomach turn now and I feel I'm eating at breakfast etc., just to get food in me. I actually feel ill when I think of food. Please help.

I'm sorry to hear about your infection, but glad that the antibiotics are on top of it now! The main thing is to keep up your fluid intake and to have starchy carbohydrates for energy, so the foods you are managing to have at the moment - like rice pudding, soup etc - are actually the right ones. To that list you could also add bread and pasta, but for now just focus on what you really fancy even if it's not as healthy as you wold normally eat. A few days without good nutrition isn't going to hurt and the main emphasis is keeping up your energy. You might also want to take a multivitamin and mineral just at the moment though and continue it for a week or two as you feel able to get back to your normal diet (the feeling of being repulsed by food should go).

If there is any silver lining to this unpleasant situation, it's that you?ll probably have lost an extra pound or two at the end of it, but don?t be surprised if you regain a bit before your weight loss settles down again. I hope you feel much better soon.
