Q.

Does alcohol hinder weight loss?

Hi, does alcohol actually prevent weight loss? I know I drink too much. I have roughly 30 units per week, sometimes more. Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

Alcohol does unfortunately contain calories in the same way that food does, so if you are drinking above the recommended allowance of alcohol regularly, this will have a substantial impact on weight loss.

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, and an average 250ml glass of white wine contains around 165 calories. Drinking several glasses of wine, or other alcoholic drinks, will mean your calorie intake will be increased.

I notice from your diary that you are drinking well over the recommended weekly alcohol allowance, and you can see from the Week View that this is contributing a significant amount of calories - nearly 4,000 calories per week. I'm not suggesting that you cut alcohol out completely, but if you were able to cut down the amount you're having, you will notice a big difference in your calorie intake.

I've also noticed from your diary that you're usually over your daily calorie allowance. Being continuously over your allowance will mean that your body isn't getting the calorie deficit it needs, which means your body reserves of fat won't be required for energy so you won't lose weight!

Make sure you are making healthier choices wherever you can - plenty of fruit and veg, lots of water, wholegrains, lean protein and low fat dairy. Eat regular meals and try and cut down on your alcohol intake. Use the Food Diary to see where your calories are coming from, and make some changes to your diet to try and stick within your calorie allowance.

Exercise is also really important as it helps to burn off extra calories and build muscle. Try and be a bit more active if you are able to which will support your diet.

I hope this helps - if you need any further support please don't hesitate to get back in touch with us. If you feel that you might need some extra support to reduce your alcohol intake I would advise you to speak to your GP, or a supportive family member or friend, who can help.
