Q.

Can you put on 6 lbs over the weekend£

I find it really hard to lose weight and I think it may be due to a history of binge eating. It's not binging of epic proportions but enough to worry me about what I have done to my body. After two weeks of virtuous eating (and two pounds weight loss) I pigged out at the weekend and have gone up by six pounds. I normally only weigh myself every couple of weeks because I know weight fluctuates but could I really have put on six pounds over a weekend?

Our expert says...

Hi, You are right not to weigh yourself too often, because, as you rightly point out, our weight does fluctuate from day to day. This can be due to numerous factors, from the time in your menstrual cycle to the weather - both of which you have little control over! So, weighing yourself every week or so gives a much more accurate picture and you are less likely to become disheartened by thinking you have failed to lose weight or gained a few pounds.

In your case, it is possible that you may have confused your body's metabolism by dieting and then over-eating, which may have caused it to hang onto those extra calories you ate over the weekend. However, you would have to eat a lot of excess food over 2-3 days to put on 6lbs in such a short period. Hopefully, you are back on the diet by now and your metabolism should settle back down. I would wait at least a week before you get back on the scales and meanwhile eat sensibly, fill in your food diary religiously and get exercising.

The important thing is not to think you have 'failed' and give up completely. Don't be too hard on yourself - it happens to us all from time to time. Yes, it is a set back, but learn from your experience, get back on track and move forward again. Consider any triggers that may have prompted your binge and avoid them, if you can, in the future. If you feel that you can't do this without help, I would advise you seeing your doctor to get some support.
