Is it wrong to eat too few calories? Some days I can have 500 calories left over - will this slow my weight loss down or cause me any problems? On the days where I'm working nights I tend to have a meal with a little bit of carbs, say 250-300 calories, then a salad and fruit for the rest of the night. I want to do this right. Any ideas if this will cause a problem, as I have heard not eating enough is just as bad as eating too much. Thanks
This is becoming a common question and I think it’s worth making the point that it illustrates that with the right foods it is quite possible to feel full whilst you are losing weight!
As to whether it's a possible to slow down your weight loss down by having too few calories, the answer is no.
In other words if your were losing 2 pounds a week on 1400 calories a day, then you could still expect to lose this amount on say 1000 calories. What we can say however is that below 1200-1400 calories any EXTRA weight loss you might see for reducing your energy intake so low is minimal, in other words it becomes a game of diminishing returns and for someone who is already struggling with hunger there is simply no point in putting the willpower under such strain for no significant reward.
For you however, who feels perfectly satisfied on a low calorie count I would not be dogmatic about trying to eat more. What it is worth pointing out however is the increasing difficulty the body may have at obtaining good nutrition (vitamins, mineral etc.) below 1000-1200 calories. If you consistently eat less than this you may also find that your weight loss slows up unsatisfactorily, at least temporarily, when you do start eating at the level we have recommended for you.
Hope this helps!
