Q.

Calorie counting when pregnant?

What approach are you taking to diet whilst pregnant? I am still filling in my food diary but I am allowing myself around 1700 kcals as opposed to the 1400 that I was on. This is mainly because I do get ravenous. I'm not always using them though - most days it is around 1500. I've read several different articles on the internet, some of which say you don't need any extra until the last trimester, others which say you need 200 per day more from the start. On the babyworld forum, the advisors say that if your appetite increases, you shouldn't worry about it.

Hi

Thanks for your question. As you probably realised when you went through the initial questionnaire for this site, we don't recommend that pregnant women should calorie restrict their diets. So I'm glad that you are setting your calorie allowance at a higher 1700 level, but I'd recommend that it actually be no less than 1800 a day. The official guidance is that a pregnant woman doesn't need to increase her calories intake at all until the final trimester, but appetite can vary hugely and if you don't feel hungry enough to eat all of these 1800 calories (2000 cals in the final three months) then fine. The main thing is to try to pack in lots of nutritional values, so try not to 'waste' your calories on sugary, fatty low nutrition foods. I hope this helps, and good luck with the pregnancy.
