Q.

Am I okay eating breakfast before working out?

Hi there, After seeing my doctor today about something unrelated, we got onto the subject of my weight loss and working out. After being diagnosed with PTSD from the birth of my 10 month old daughter, she's very keen on how I'm coping (although luckily I never suffered with pnd). Anyway, I digress. She said I should rethink my breakfasting and morning food groups. My morning is normally as follows: 6.30am - wake up with nearly black coffee 7.30-8am - feed daughter and have either banana or peanut butter ricecake, something small effectively 9am - workout (doing Ripped in 30 at the moment) 10am - 'proper breakfast - ie porridge, eggs & wholemeal toast etc I have really struggled to get breakfast into my diet and find that eating more before exercising makes me feel really sick during and after. Is there anything you can suggest i look into doing - I'm happy to try pretty much anything, although I'm intolerance to raw apples (cooked are fine as well as juice for some reason!). Many thanks.

A.

Hi there,

Thanks for your email and sorry to hear about what you've been through since the birth of your daughter.

In terms of fitting breakfast into your routine, from what you've told me, the way you eat now seems to me to be a perfect solution for your exercise routine. I completely agree that eating a big breakfast before exercising can make you feel sick - having a heavy meal before exercise means that it won't be digested properly, as the blood flow and energy you use during exercise diverts away from your digestive system.

If you are exercising every day, then having a drink and a small snack such as a banana before exercise is fine as long as you then have something more substantial afterwards. You mentioned feeding your daughter, but I wasn't sure whether you meant that you are breastfeeding her? If you are then having that snack is even more important.

I can see that you've been losing weight on the plan so hopefully this means your current system is working okay. In terms of the rest of your diet, I can see that you do tend to go over your calorie allowance quite often. If you're not losing weight as quickly as you'd hoped, then it could be down to this rather than your breakfast habits.

The key to losing weight is sticking to the allowance in your account - this is completely personal to you and has factored in all of your details to give you a personal target. Make sure you're eating regular meals and exercising as much as you can - you seem to be doing this pretty well most of the time, so stick at it, and I'm sure you'll get to where you want to be. If you are breastfeeding then make sure you're eating enough to produce sufficient for your baby.

If I haven't answered your query, or you have anything further you'd like to ask, please don't hesitate to contact me again.
