Should i stop breastfeeding to lose weight?

I gained about 20kg while pregnant and my daughter is now one year old and I have only managed to lose a couple of kilos. I eat reasonably well and exercise regularly (walking my daughter and yoga) and can only think that maybe my not managing to lose any weight is due to breastfeeding (i.e. I'm not one of the lucky ones who find it just 'melts' away!). I don't really want to stop feeding her just to lose the weight, so my question is can I do anything else to encourage my metabolism to speed up? I do find it difficult to drink enough water each day - could that be contributing to my problem?

Unless breastfeeding makes you hugely hungry, and you are therefore exceeding your calorie allowance by quite a bit, I can't think of any reason why it should be making you hang on to any excess weight. In fact if anything breastfeeding should be helping you burn fat as it can use up 200-500 calories a day. You don?t say how many calories you are currently eating or how you are currently using this site, but basically if you were to track your current calorie intake and reduce this by 500 calories a day it should help you lose a gentle one pound a week. However, as you?ll have noticed, we do not recommend weight loss while breastfeeding so do check with your GP first.
