Q.

Is my breakfast cereal okay for my son?

Hi there As part of my new healthy living I've started making myself eat breakfast again. I've bought lots of different cereals, muesli and granola. However, my 5 year old son wanted to try some and now loves Special K for breakfast. My question is, is it ok for him to eat this for breakfast at such a young age? He has a pretty diverse diet, eating lots of fruit, veg and meats as well as the odd treat at the weekends. He is also very active. What I don't want to do is bulk him up on the wrong things or cut out things he needs at such a young age. Thank you.

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.

Please don’t worry about your son enjoying your breakfast cereals – there is nothing in breakfast cereal that would be harmful to him in any way. Special K in particular is fortified with vitamins and minerals, and contains some wholewheat, so he’ll be getting extra nutrients from eating the cereal. If he’s also having it with milk, it means he’ll be getting nutrients from that too.

Having a good breakfast is one of the most important things for children to do as it teaches them about healthy eating habits for life – understanding how much better you feel after having something to eat in the morning is really important.

As with all things, it’s important that your son gets a good variety of different foods, so perhaps try and add in other types of breakfasts too (or add things into the cereal that he’s enjoying such as fruit or dried fruits) to introduce different flavours and nutrients.

The only downside of your son eating your cereal if that there will less left for you! But really that is the only problem you need to worry about – it sounds like you’re already doing a great job with his diet.

Don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.

Janet
