Q.

Is muesli a good breakfast choice?

I know oats are good for you but is Muesli a good Breakfast and what should the portion size should you have, or can you give me other options. Also is skimmed milk better for you than semi skimmed?

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

Muesli can be a very good breakfast choice as it's full of oats, wholegrain wheat flakes, nuts, dried fruit and whey protein. This makes it a great combination of fibre, protein, good fats and vitamins from fruits. Just ensure you opt for the unsweetened versions, as the sweetened versions can be quite high in added sugar.

In terms of portion sizes, a 45g serving is quite standard for breakfast. This with 125ml of semi-skimmed milk would be approximately 230 calories, so if you had that with a piece of fruit you'd have a well balanced breakfast for about 300 calories.

Other great breakfast choices are:

•   Porridge

•   Egg white omelette with vegetables

•   Wholemeal bread with poached eggs

•   Wholegrain breakfast cereals such as shredded wheat, Weetabix and bran flakes

•   Mixed fruit salad with natural or greek yogurt

The best thing to do is mix up your breakfasts to ensure you're getting variety in your diet. So try to have 2-3 different breakfasts a week.

Both semi-skimmed and skimmed milk are health options as they are much lower in fat than whole milk varieties. Skimmed milk is even lower in fat and calories than semi-skimmed milk, and contains just a little bit more calcium - so it is a bit better for someone following a calorie reduced diet. However it's also important to enjoy the foods you eat and if you much prefer the taste of semi-skimmed milk then it's no problem to continue having this instead of skimmed milk.

I hope this helps and please get in touch if you need anything further.

Kind regards

Emma
