Q.

Is late dinner affecting my plan?

What is the latest time that you should eat dinner in the evening? I've been getting in from work really late and having dinner at 9pm! I'm sure it's affecting my eating plan.

A.

Our expert says...

If you’ve been getting in late and eating dinner at 9pm, please don’t panic, as there’s very little evidence that it will harm your ability to lose weight. Studies of people who took their main meal at midday or around 8pm found no difference in fat burning, with the researchers concluding that it’s what you eat in total over 24 hours that matters, not when you eat it.

That said, we do tend to advise people to eat earlier if they can, because eating later usually means that you are starting your evening hungrier and may find it harder to make wise choices, or to stop eating when you are full.

However if you simply can’t change the situation you must work with it. Planning in advance is key, so you don’t fall into the trap of snacking unhealthily whilst you wait for your meal to be ready. How about throwing some lean meat, vegetables and stock into a slow cooker before you go to work, or keeping some ready chopped veg in the fridge for a quick stir-fry? If there’s the opportunity to have a large meal at lunchtime and just a bowl of soup when you get home, that’s another way of going about it too.

I hope these suggestions help, and please rest assured that as long as you’re keeping to your calories you’ll still lose weight!

Good luck,

Angela
