Q.

How can I stop the weight I gain due to my period?

Hi, I am currently taking Orlistat to help with my weight loss, so therefore I am checking my fat content strictly as I don't want to get caught out. I have lost 8lb on the tablets and also being able to watch my calories and my exercise programme..with using this site, it's been a god send for me.. I do admit to the odd piece of cake on occasions. I am gutted this week I have put on 4lb. I have just had my period and always suspected that I put on, because of how I felt, but never 4lb. now I will have to work twice as hard to lose the 4lb and my 2lb that I set myself for each week, so I can aim to my target....is there anything I can do to reduce the amount of weight I gain before and during my periods each month.. I am 42 and understand the difficulties of my age.. I have also had my thyroid gland removed and know that it slows down my metabolism.. it is soul destroying when I have been so good. I never ate fruit or veg before and I had a very poor diet intake.. so I have restructured everything I eat or drink even down to skimmed milk and not semi on breakfast( what breakfast, I never had it) and no butter at all.. I`ve had my first banana at the age of 42. yep so you can see, I've been good.. .. I want to lose approx 1 and 1/2 stone for beginning of Oct for my daughter's 18 birthday.. please advise GILLIAN.

Hi Gillian

I can understand how upset you feel. But how long is it since you started losing weight? If this is the first menstrual period you have had since you began your weight loss regimen, perhaps you may be pleasantly surprise to find the 4lbs (which after all is usually just water) will melt away again. If i helps to reassure you, it’s virtually impossible to put on 4lbs of fat in such a short item. And with the aid of Orlistat - which you can not overeat fatty foods on - I feel sure that this is a blip rather than a permanent collapse.  That said, you’re thyroid condition is not going to work in your  weight-loss favour unless your levels of thyroid hormone are carefully checked, so do make sure you have the right medical attention to make this happen. Meanwhile try to concentrate on how well you are doing. It’s so impressive how you have changed your diet and how you are now doing everything so much more healthily! Even though your body doesn’t seem to be doing what you want it to be be doing at the moment, you know you have already done yourself a huge favour in terms of your ongoing health and well being. Good luck and well done!
