Q.

How can I stick to my diet while eating out?

Hi,

I'm an events coordinator, and so have to stay away from home about 6-8 times a month, meaning I have to eat out. This makes it very difficult to stick to calorie intake whilst away (especially when my colleagues aren't on a diet!!). Can you please help?!

Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hi

Losing weight can obviously be more difficult when you have no choice but to eat out a lot. So you’re going to have to become a bit of an expert! First of all, you should be able to find most items in our database, or at least a close equivalent. If you’re struggling, drop us a note and we’ll try to clarify the content of particular dishes for you.

The other thing to bear in mind, which will help a lot, is that many restaurant chains do now publish nutritional info on their dishes online.

If all else fails, try to follow a few basic rules, which would include no fried potatoes (unless they are chunky wedges or thick chips and you have just a few!), no creamy sauces and any salad dressings on the side so you can control the amount you add.  Grilled fish, lean steak and skinless chicken are good options, which would be best teamed with a plain baked potato or salad.

If you’re eating something which probably has a lot more calories than is healthy, leave some food on your plate and ask the waiter to remove it before you weaken! With practice you should start to instinctively know what is going to deliver you 400-600 calories (a reasonable amount for a main meal), but watch those drinks too! It always pays to add everything to your food diary, so you can learn by your mistakes as you go!

Hope that helps.
