Help with a detox and dairy intolerance....

I had a food intolerance test and am intolerant to dairy and orange. I have been advised by my nutritionist to not eat dairy for 4 months and to detox....can I have some help with recipes and advice please?

Our expert says...

Hello there.

Toxins accumulate in our bodies through the food and drinks we consume and also through our skin and lungs.  This can lead to feeling bloated, sluggish and run-down.  But it is possible to detoxify and cleanse the digestive system, allowing our bodies to function more efficiently, by adjusting your diet.

Firstly, I would advise removing foods and chemicals that are hard for our bodies to use and eating foods rich in essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  For some general advice for a detox diet, I would avoid, or minimise: caffeine; alcohol; processed foods; salt; sugar; wheat; red meat; fried foods; and dairy products, which you have been advised not eat to eat for a few months anyway.

There are a number of dairy-free margarines in the supermarkets and, if you are looking for a substitute for milk, you can try soya milk, rice milk or oat milk.

There are loads of other things you can eat!  Fruits, vegetables, wholegrains (brown rice, rye, barley, oats, millet, buckwheat), pulses (peas, beans, lentils), nuts, seeds, fish, vegetable oils, and lots of water to flush out those toxins!

For some recipe ideas, look in the Meal Suggestions or Swap Recipes sections of the website for inspiration.

Following a detox diet for a few weeks can leave you feeling rejuvenated and full of energy and often leads to losing a few pounds and acquiring healthier eating patterns.  This certainly sounds good to me!
