Help I have IBS and a galbladder removed...

What do I do about combination of IBS and no gall bladder - on one hand high fibre upsets me, as does fat as well!

A tricky combination! The good news is that by using your food diary and keeping a check of what you are eating you should be able to keep the fat side of things under control. You should be okay if you keep within and preferably below the fat maximum we recommend, but you?ll work out from trial and error how much you can have. The main thing is to avoid a lot of fat at once - spread what you eat over the day and avoid overtly fatty foods. On the IBS / fibre front, you need to take a slow but sure approach to increasing how much you have. In principle a high fibre diet should be good for you and may improve IBS symptoms, but you may need to increase the amount you have in your diet very slowly and particulalry to avoid too much of the soluble type. That means going carefully with fruit, pulses and possibly oats. You sould still try to get your 5 a day, but don?t go over the top wth juces, smoothies or fruit for snacking. Similarly, take care with small kernels and seeds that could lodge in the undulations of your gt wall and irritate, like sweetcorn, peas, sunflower seeds, tomatoes etc. Taking a probiotic such as Actimel or Yakult may help your IBS, as may a peppermint oil supplement.
